In the spring I buy steers from neighbouring farms and finish them on my pasture. The steers I buy comes from cattle that are bred for and thrive in my area, the Lanark Highlands. Like dogs and people, the purest breeds have problems, mutts tend to be healthier and cattle are no different. I tend towards Charolais, one of the oldest French breeds and the earliest European imports into Canada, Charolais are large and heavy, white to cream-colored, they are hardy cattle with rapid growth and good muscling. Locally Charolais are bred to Angus bulls. This provides excellence in mothering ability and a sound genetic base for producing excellent quality beef.

Our management protocol involves rotational grazing. This means we place all our cattle on one pasture where they can uniformly graze the plant growth while at its optimum stage for peak nutritional value. The cattle are then rotated to new pasture every 5 to 7 days depending on the rate of growth of the grass. This provides numerous benefits to the animal, the pasture land, and consequently to the beef produced.

Rotation presents the animal with fewer potentially disease causing pathogens. All healthy animals harbor various strains of bacteria in their intestinal tract and it usually causes no problem. Yet, when the animal is kept in the same environment for extended periods contamination occurs by allowing a build up of these potential pathogens. Our cattle are rotated to clean pasture regularly and this contributes to a vast decrease in the incidence of disease. We never use antibiotics in our cattle's feed or water.

The land is naturally replenished by the cattle. A balanced synergy develops between cattle and their environment. What the cattle remove through grazing they more than add back through naturally occurring animal fertilizer and aeration of the land. This balance makes unnatural fertilizers or weed killers unnessesary. Our Goal is to provide our cattle with the healthiest pasture possible, the pasture and the soil that supports the pasture is where we place our efforts. The cattle follow right along.

Scientific evidence is overwhelming with 100% grass-fed beef; 50% less saturated fat; its not greasy, higher levels of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), More Beta Carotene, Omega 3, 6, Vitamins A and E, A healthier heart, less cancer, arthritis, and allergies.

We are deeply committed to providing the highest quality of life for our animals and the resulting highest quality of food to our friends and family knowing that a superior product contributes to the health of our customers and the planet. Food that is free from pesticides, antibiotics, growth hormones and cruelty.
